An alternating relay is used to alternate the use of two motor circuits. When the coil is energized the first time, one contact closes and will open when the coil is de-energized. When the coil energizes again the other contact closes and will open when the coil de-energizes. Alternating relays are often used for controlling pumps and compressors to equalize wear.
