An inductive proximity sensor is a type of non-contact electronic proximity sensor that is used to detect the position of metal objects. An inductive field is generated by the sensor and when the field is interrupted by a metal target, the sensor provides an output. The sensing range of an inductive sensor is dependent on the size of the inductive coil and type of metal being detected. Carbon steel is used as the reference target material for determining the published sensing range.
